What is Chaldean numerology?

Chaldean numerology originated in ancient Babylon — the Chaldean civilisation that occupied present-day Iraq between the 9th and 6th centuries BC. The Chaldeans were among the most sophisticated astronomers and mystics of the ancient world, and they believed that letters and numbers were connected to planetary energies that shaped human destiny.

The system was brought to the modern West primarily by Cheiro (Count Louis Hamon, 1866–1936), an Irish-born palmist and numerologist who used these methods to advise kings, politicians and celebrities, including King Edward VII, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain and Sarah Bernhardt.

His foundational text, Cheiro's Book of Numbers, remains the primary reference for Chaldean numerology practitioners worldwide.

Key principle: In Chaldean numerology, the number 9 is considered sacred and is never assigned to a letter. Values run from 1–8 only. This is the fundamental difference from Pythagorean numerology, which assigns 9 to I and R.

Chaldean vs Pythagorean — what's the difference?

Most people in the West are familiar with Pythagorean numerology, where A=1, B=2, C=3... Z=26 reduced. Chaldean is different in three important ways:

  • Letter values are 1–8, never 9 — 9 is sacred and reserved for the divine
  • Values are assigned by sound, not position — letters with similar sounds carry similar values
  • Compound numbers are interpreted individually — 23 and 32 both reduce to 5, but they carry completely different symbolism

Cheiro himself was clear: "The Chaldean system is more occult and mysterious than the Pythagorean and is considered more accurate by those who have studied both."

The Chaldean letter-to-number table

Here is the Chaldean value assignment for each letter of the alphabet:

ValueLetters
1A, I, J, Q, Y
2B, K, R
3C, G, L, S
4D, M, T
5E, H, N, X
6U, V, W
7O, Z
8F, P
9Not assigned (sacred)

To calculate your name number: assign each letter its Chaldean value, add them all, then reduce to a single digit (unless it's a master compound).

Example: PRIYA = P(8) + R(2) + I(1) + Y(1) + A(1) = 13 → 1+3 = 4

Moolank: your driver number

The Moolank (also called the Driver Number or Psychic Number) is calculated from the day of birth only. If you were born on the 14th, your Moolank is 1+4 = 5. If born on the 28th, it's 2+8 = 10 → 1+0 = 1.

Cheiro considered the Moolank the most powerful number in a person's chart because it cannot be changed. It governs the outer personality, material life, and the immediate impression you make on the world.

The Moolank is also what determines your planet ruler — and therefore your lucky day, colours, gemstone and metal.

Bhagyank: your destiny number

The Bhagyank (also called the Destiny Number or Life Path Number) is calculated by adding all the digits of your full date of birth and reducing to a single digit.

Example: Born 14 May 1985 = 1+4+0+5+1+9+8+5 = 33 → 3+3 = 6

The Bhagyank governs the deeper, spiritual undercurrent of the life — the path you are fated to walk. While the Moolank is more immediate and visible, the Bhagyank is the overarching destiny that shapes major life events and your ultimate purpose.

Name number: your changeable vibration

Unlike Moolank and Bhagyank, the Name Number can be changed — by altering the spelling of your name. This is the basis of numerological name correction.

Cheiro wrote: "When a name is not in harmony with the birth number, there will be a continual sense of muddle and jumble in that person's affairs, and they will fail to realise the full expression of their powers."

The goal is to choose a name number that is "friendly" to both your Moolank and Bhagyank. Cheiro identified specific friendly pairs: 1 and 4 are interchangeable, 2 and 7 are interchangeable, 3 and 6 are interchangeable.

Compound numbers — Cheiro's secret layer

This is where Chaldean numerology truly diverges from every other system. Before reducing your name sum to a single digit, the compound number carries its own deep symbolism. Cheiro documented these for numbers 10–52.

A few key examples:

  • 19 — "The Sun": The most fortunate number in the entire system. Brilliant success, happiness, esteem.
  • 21 — "Crown of the Magi": Brilliant advancement, achievement, honours in later life.
  • 16 — "Tower Struck by Lightning": Warning of sudden, unexpected reversal. Danger through one's own actions.
  • 26 — "Partnerships Bring Loss": Ruin through partnerships, associations or the actions of others.
  • 23 — "Royal Star of the Lion": Great fortune, protection from higher powers, success against all odds.

This is why two people with name number 5 can have very different outcomes — one might have compound 23 (Royal Star) and another compound 32 (Magic Power), both reducing to 5, but with entirely different energetic qualities.

How to calculate your full profile

Here's the complete calculation process:

  1. Moolank: Day of birth only, reduced to single digit. (14th → 1+4 = 5)
  2. Bhagyank: Full date of birth, all digits summed, reduced. (14/05/1985 → 33 → 6)
  3. Name Number: Assign Chaldean values to each letter, sum all, reduce. (PRIYA SHARMA → total → reduce)
  4. Check Compatibility: Is the name number friendly to both Moolank and Bhagyank?
  5. Check Compound: What does the unreduced name sum symbolise per Cheiro?
